Thesis

Deep Tech hardware startups succeed through two essential founder qualities: Narrative Command (dominating category discourse from day one) and Operational Mastery (disciplined risk sequencing across Lab, Pilot, Demonstration, and Commercial stages). We invest at the very beginning, when founders can still establish narrative dominance and adopt operational frameworks before complexity increases.

Likely not a fit for

Founders lacking discipline around risk sequencing, who delay Narrative Command until later stages, or who lack technical depth. Skeptical of undisciplined scaling (Fisker model) vs. staged deliberate approaches (Rivian model). No consumer apps, pure software, or non-hardware plays.

Lux Capital$100K–$100M

Early institutional backer that sources tech from academia and government labs, partnering with scientist- and engineer-led teams to deeply interrogate science, dual-use/defense opportunities, and amplify through an in-house media platform. Explicitly aims to "turn science fiction into science fact" by backing companies at the intersection of the new and the not-yet-imagined, built around scientists, engineers, and polymaths rather than traditional finance backgrounds who can deeply interrogate emerging science and complex tech. The firm systematically mines academia and government labs for "technological gems" and has become one of the earliest institutional backers of dual-use and defense technology.
